It only took 159 games, but the Padres finally won an extra innings game, beating the Giants 5-2 on Wednesday night. After falling behind on a 2nd inning homer by Thairo Estrada, Xander Bogaerts tied the game in the 5th with a sac-fly. But the Giants would immediately respond with a run over their own in the bottom of the 5th. Garrett Cooper tied the game in the 7th with a solo homer, and the game would ultimately go to extra innings, where the Padres had not won a game all season. After Xander Bogaerts gave the Padres a 3-2 lead with a run-scoring sacrifice fly, Manny Machado's two-out two-run bloop single gave the Padres a 3-run cushion that would ultimately lead to their first extra innings win of the season and let them cling to their playoff hopes for another day. After a day off on Thursday, the Padres will wrap up their season with a 3-game series against the White Sox in Chicago.
