News of a new album from The Cure has been around for some time now, but details have been rather scant up to this point. Frontman Robert Smith decided to shed light on the status of the new record as it could be coming much sooner than anticipated.

Smith spoke to NME ahead of the NME Awards and gave an update on the long-awaited new album. “So I’ve been working on two Cure albums, and one of them is finished,” Smith said. “Unfortunately, it’s the second one that’s finished. [On the other] I’ve got to do four vocals, and there are 10 songs on each album. We’re mixing next month on April 1, so I’ve got three weeks left.”

Smith went on to reveal that the new album will be called Songs Of A Lost World. “It’s got artwork, it’s got a running order, it’s almost done!” He exclaimed.

However, there’s a bit of a hold up. Production delays. “They’re so slow because of vinyl, but it might come in September,” Smith said. “I’d rather it just came out. I can’t stand the anticipation.”

Songs Of A Lost World will mark the first new album from The Cure since 2008 as Smith called it “the doomiest thing that we’ve ever done.” However, Smith promises that the second album will be filled with more sunshine and rainbows as he described it as “upbeat.”

Smith also revealed that he has a solo album that’ll be coming in 2023. “It’s a thing I’ve wanted to do for so many years,” he said. “I realize I’ve only got one shot at doing it, so I’ve now started to add real instruments and acoustic instruments, whereas this time two years ago it was literally just feedback – but I’ve kind of grown a bit disenchanted with it. I’d listened to it like three times and I think it’s rubbish.”
