The now married couple and electronic duo have released their fourth studio album, No Rules Sandy, a follow-up to the band’s GRAMMY-nominated 2020 album, Free Love. The new album is a mix of improvisation and experimentation. Talking to Bruce Headlam, Amelia and Nick share all their creative process and how No Rules Sandy came to be.

When Amelia asked Nick, a music producer and bassist, to remix her band Mountain Man’s hit single “Play It Right,” he did, and the rest is history. Sylvan Esso has always had a very sleek, electro-pop feel to their production. Amelia’s powerful voice is front and center, surrounded by harmonies and samples of her own voice. Nick’s genre-destroying bass creates intricate, pulsing grooves for Amelia’s voice to inhabit.

Faced with the Omicron variant during the time of their annual road trip from North Carolina to Los Angeles, Amelia revealed, “Nick and I found ourselves with like a little baby studio set up in this house, with no one to hang out other than each other. And so every day we tried to write a song, and the most magical part of it is that every time we tried, we could.” She continued, “we wrote all these songs in the span of three weeks together.”

"Yeah it was like, kind of like this totally magical, unexpected time that we never saw coming," Nick added. “And it was all kind of born out of this wild trip where like everything went wrong — except this.”
