Gov. Newsom tours new coronavirus testing lab in Valencia

Governor Gavin Newsom has toured a new coronavirus testing lab that just opened in Valencia.

Once the lab gets up to full production it'll let the state process another 150,000 tests per day which can lead to quicker results.

"Once we get up to 100,000 as we phase up, the costs are $37.78. So more volume, lower cost - lowest cost is $30.78 when we get this lab fully operational," Newsom said.

Perkin-Elmer is contractually required "to turn around test results" in 24 to 48 hours.

Newsom says this lab will help lower the cost of coronavirus tests - which can run as high as $150.

He says the opening comes at the right time with the possibility of more cases due to a winter surge.

The governor and Secretary of State Alex Padilla will visit a voting center in Los Angeles later this afternoon.
