DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) -- Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving is currently under evaluation for a potential NFL suspension, according to ESPN.
Earlier Tuesday, Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory was suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher is reporting that this is not a "new revelation" about Irving, who has been suspended twice previously by the NFL for violating the drug policy. Fisher reported last week that the Cowboys are done with the defensive tackle.
Irving was plagued by "off-the-field" issues the entire season, Fisher reported, missing "multiple" mandatory drug tests and not showing up to the team's headquarters in Frisco to rehab an injured ankle.
Irving sustained a high ankle sprain in practice on Nov. 2. More problematic: "He's just sort of checked out,'' one person close to the situation told Fisher. Irving has played in only 10 games over the past two seasons, but registered eight sacks during that stretch.
“I’m in the NFL because I’m great at what I do,” Irving wrote on Instagram on Monday night. “I’m not in the NFL because I’m an Eagle Scout, or the perfect model citizen. I didn’t put on a mask or kiss ass to be where I am. I’m here on natural ability. This is God’s plan. Not mine. Trust me, I’m adjusting to it as well. Once I step on the field and stop performing, THEN we have a problem … So does anyone have anything to say about my play?”
Gregory, 26, has long battled addiction. After debuting in 2015, the pass rusher played in just two games in 2016 due to multiple suspensions and missed all of 2017 under a year-long ban. The NFL reinstated him last July 17, satisfied with his improvement, and Gregory played in 14 games, amassing six sacks. Now: another suspension.
"Certainly he has his challenges ... continues to have them," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday. "I don't think those things go away, so we're going to keep working and cheering for him and I think he'll only get better as it goes."
