(92.3 The Fan reporting from INDIANAPOLIS) -- Ole Miss' D.K. Metcalf stole the show among the wide receivers on the field at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The 21-year-old Metcalf is a physical freak, an incredible athlete with a chiseled physique.
Metcalf was clocked unofficially at 4.33 seconds in the 40-yard dash on Saturday, just two-hundredths of a second slower than the fastest wideout time of the day (Ohio State's Parris Campbell). Metcalf's was the fastest 40 time registered by someone at least 225 pounds since they began tracking those statistics in 2003, according to NFL research.
The 6-foot-3-3/8, 228-pound Metcalf previously set an unofficial Combine record for receivers with a wingspan that measured 82 7/8 inches.
Metcalf's vertical leap was a jaw-dropping 40 1/2 inches and his broad jump came in at 11-feet-2 inches. This after he pumped out 27 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press on Friday.
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey had to be salivating after watching Metcalf.
"I'd like to have a 6-3 guy that can run 4.3," Dorsey said Thursday. "I'll take that every day, but you're not going to get those guys. So you really want competitive guys that love the game of football."
Dorsey is right: He won't find that guy in this year's draft unless he jumps up the board from No. 17. Metcalf, a projected top-10 pick, is expected to be long gone before the Browns go on the clock.
“I see myself as the best receiver in this draft because I'm a competitor and I’m going to compete every day,” Metcalf said.
Metcalf will meet formally with the Browns in Indianapolis, and said he would welcome the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of cousin Eric Metcalf by playing in Cleveland (his father, Terrrence, also played in the NFL, and former pro Terry Metcalf is another cousin).
“Just to play with quarterback like Baker Mayfield (would) be great,” Metcalf said. “You know, it’s just another blessed opportunity just to get drafted by the Cleveland Brown organization, so I'm gonna take it one step at a time right now.”
Meltcalf's 2018 season at Ole Miss was cut short after he suffered a neck injury. In seven games, he caught 26 passes for 569 yards and five touchdowns. In 21 college games, Metcalf had 67 catches for 1,228 yards and 14 touchdowns.
