(92.9 The Game) -- Andrew Luck shocked the NFL Saturday when he announced his retirement from the league shortly after the Indianapolis Colts played in a preseason game.

Carl Dukes spoke to Luck via text after his announcement.

“The injury pain and rehab was too much, too overwhelming, and I was starting to get in a negative place,” Luck said.

The announcement was shockingly surprising to Dukes, who has known Luck and his family since the quarterback was in high school.

"This takes courage. It’s not about money, it’s about is living the dream worth what he is going through," said Dukes. "He’s about to be a father and this was something that was in the works. He got to camp and he said 'Let me see how I feel.'

"I think this changes the complexity of the NFL in terms of what the AFC looks like.”
