Every year we hear how important it is to get a flu shot. But this season, with COVID-19 in play, it's more important than ever.

There are a couple reasons for that. First, the healthcare system doesn't need any more stress right now. An ICU filled with COVID-19 patients and flu patients together would create chaos across the system.

But there's some good news for people wondering if there will be enough of the flu vaccine this year.

"We already have a large supply of vaccines in our refrigerator," said Nan Lomen, clinical supervisor of Worksite Wellness at Hennepin Healthcare.  "We've already have started vaccinating at schools and work sites, and right now there are no delays so it's a really good year."

Loman says the CDC has asked manufacturers to make ten to twelve million more doses, because of an expected increase in demand.

Loman also said it is possible to get both the flu, and COVID 19 at the same time.

"And we don't have a lot of history with it to know that would happen if you got them at the same time," she says. "Which is why it's so important to get vaccinated."
