Game of the year?
The Yankees and Twins produced an instant classic Tuesday night in Minneapolis that ended with the Bronx Bombers winning 14-12 in 10 innings.
On Wednesday's "Boomer and Gio" show, Gregg Giannotti and Jerry Recco couldn't stop raving about it.
"Last night was absolutely spectacular as the Yankees win in 10 innings, 14-12," Giannotti said. "We've talked about the negatives of too many home runs, too many runs, long games, bad bullpens, but when you get all of those things in a game like last night, you don't think about any of those negatives because it was thrilling. It's about as exciting as a baseball game can possibly be.
"I can't imagine there's going to be another regular season game as exciting as that with two good teams in the Yankees and Twins."
The game featured five lead changes or ties in the final three innings, six home runs, five hits and seven RBIs from Didi Gregorius, and a spectacular diving catch by Aaron Hicks to end it.
"That was something last night in a lot of different ways," said Recco, filling in for the vacationing Boomer Esiason. "It was fun. It was exciting. You had a lot of home runs, if you like that. You had some amazing plays. You had some crappy pitching. And in the end, you had a Yankee win, and, I mean, you can look at several players as to why they won this game last night."
Giannotti said the game was just the latest sign that this might be the Yankees' year.
"This was another one of those nights with all the special things that happen that give you that sense that this Yankee team is destined for greatness when you're down 8-2, you're down 9-5, you seem like you're going to lose the game in the 10th and then Aaron Hicks makes that catch, of course," Gio said. "The game had to end that way. It couldn't have ended on a foul-ball popup. It had to end that way with the full extension of Aaron Hicks making that catch."
