Hitting the ball into the water usually spells disaster in golf. Not so for Kevin Dougherty in the final round of the Web.com Tour’s Savannah Golf Championship on Sunday.
Dougherty’s tee shot wound up floating on the edge of a water hazard on the par-4 5th hole at the Landings Club - Deer Creek Golf Course in Savannah, Ga. After a bogey-double bogey-bogey streak on the previous three holes, the 27-year-old Oklahoma State alumnus was fed up.
Dougherty took off his shirt and decided to take a whack at the golf ball turned fishing bobber.
There was a huge splash of water and mud upon contact, and the ball bounced on the green and smoothly found the center of the cup, as if it had been a routine putt.
A shirtless Dougherty -- and the crowd -- went wild. His caddie tried to chest-bump him, thankfully mostly missing to avoid sending his player back into the water hazard.
Dougherty eventually made his way to the green, his shirt now back on, to retrieve his wet ball and acknowledge the crowd.
Dougherty tied for 37th in the tournament, but nobody will top his water shot for quite some time.
