Report: Yankees Voice Displeasure To MLB About Josh Donaldson Trade

By WFAN.com

The Yankees are among several teams reportedly upset about the Cleveland Indians' acquisition of third baseman Josh Donaldson.

The Yankees and Boston Red Sox have voiced displeasure to Major League Baseball about the Aug. 31 trade between the Indians and Toronto Blue Jays, The Athletic reported. The Houston Astros also asked the commissioner's office for clarity on why the deal was approved and were satisfied with the explanation, according to the website.

The issue is that, by rule, a player must be certified healthy before being placed on trade waivers. A calf injury has kept Donaldson out since May 28.

Donaldson began a rehab assignment on Aug. 29, the same day he was placed on waivers. The 32-year-old infielder has yet to play a big-league game for the Indians and was placed on the 10-day disabled list again Sept. 3, retroactive to Sept. 1.

"I guess he got reinjured on the plane," an unnamed executive told The Athletic.

According to the report, Donaldson believed he was not healthy enough to play in the majors on Aug. 29 and feared a setback could harm his value in free agency this winter.

After Donaldson's agent spoke with the players' union, a league official contacted potentially interested teams to notify them of Donaldson's health concerns, The Athletic reported. He went unclaimed and was later traded to the Indians, who met with him to evaluate his health.

Donaldson could be activated from the DL on Tuesday. While he only hit .234 with five homers in 36 games with the Blue Jays this season, Donaldson could provide significant help to the Indians lineup if he can return anywhere close to his old form. Donaldson is a three-time All-Star and was voted American League MVP in 2015. He is a .275 career hitter who who hit at least 29 home runs from 2014 to 2017.
