EVENT: Harriett’s Bookshop grand opening

DETAILS: This new boutique bookstore celebrates women authors, artists and activists. A teacher, an author and an activist, owner Jeannine Cook decided now was the time — given the current political climate and growing racial tensions — that a bookshop focused on strengthening connections was needed.

EVENT: Chestnut Hill on Ice

DETAILS: Bundle up for a pop-up ice skating rink and a bunch of other ice-themed activities, including live ice carving demonstrations, an ice bonfire, a yurt village, an ice bar, and much more. There will also be a chili competition among local restaurants.

EVENT: Vietland’s fourth annual Tet Festival: #YearoftheMightyMice

WHERE: Hoa Binh Supermarket, 16th Street and Washington Avenue, South Philadelphia
DETAILS: Celebrate Vietnamese culture and uplift different cultural practices during this winter block party to celebrate the year of the mighty mice. There will be family activities, homemade food, and cultural performances. Plaza tenants had received eviction notices back in November, but they now say have negotiated a longer contract to stay put until April 30.

EVENT: African-American Children’s Book Fair

DETAILS: Now in its 28th year, this book fair featuring diverse characters and stories about people of color is back. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend, and visitors will have a chance to meet authors and illustrators in person.
