Summer used to be simple.
A trip to the beach. A backyard barbecue. Catching fireflies. Riding bikes until the streetlights came on. Maybe a family vacation if you were lucky.
Today, summer can feel a little different.
Open social media on any given day and you'll find a timeline of concerts, tropical vacations, rooftop dinners, beach sunsets, boating trips, amusement parks, and perfectly curated family adventures. Everyone seems to be having the best summer ever.
Like, does anyone even work anymore?
And if you're spending your Saturday folding laundry, running errands, or simply relaxing at home, it's easy to wonder if you're somehow doing summer wrong.
Spoiler: you're not.
That's why we connected with our friends at Virtua Health for some simple tips on how to stop chasing the "perfect" summer and start enjoying the one you're actually having.

The highlight reel problem
Social media has a funny way of turning experiences into scorecards.
How many vacations did you take? How many concerts did you attend? Did you make a summer bucket list? Did your kids have enough adventures? Did you maximize every sunny weekend?
Without realizing it, many of us start measuring our summers against what we see online. The result can be a feeling of FOMO. Instead of enjoying what we're doing, we start focusing on what everyone else appears to be doing.
One important thing to remember is that social media rarely shows the full picture.
The beach photo doesn't show the three hours spent sitting in traffic. The concert video doesn't show the expensive tickets or long lines. The smiling family vacation photo doesn't capture the sibling arguments or gnarly sunburns.
We're often comparing our everyday reality to someone else's carefully selected highlights. And that's a comparison nobody can win.
Simple ways to enjoy summer without the pressure
Define your own perfect summer: Before social media tells you what summer should look like, decide what you actually want from the season. More relaxation? More time with family? More time outdoors? More adventures? There's no wrong answer.
Stop counting: Not every summer needs a bucket list, challenge, or checklist. Sometimes it's enough to simply enjoy the day you're having.
Create small moments of joy: You don't need a plane ticket to make memories. A walk after dinner, a beach day, a backyard movie night, or a spontaneous ice cream run can become the moments you remember most.
Put down the phone occasionally: The next time you're watching a sunset, at a concert, or spending time with loved ones, consider experiencing part of it without documenting it. Some memories are worth keeping for yourself.
Give yourself permission to rest: Summer doesn't have to be productive. You don't need to optimize every weekend. Rest, relaxation, and doing absolutely nothing once in a while are valuable, too.
The best summers are the imperfect ones
The truth is, there's no such thing as a perfect summer.
Plans get rained out. Vacations get delayed. Kids get cranky. Sunburns happen. And sometimes that friendly game of pickleball becomes a not-so-friendly reminder that you're not 22 anymore.
The good news? A great summer isn't about perfection. It's about making memories, embracing the unexpected, and finding joy in the moments that don't go exactly according to plan.
And if those moments don’t quite go according to plan – like a random case of poison ivy, a rolled ankle during a game of tag, or the sudden realization that you’re not quite as athletic as you were when you were 16 - Virtua Urgent Care is there when you need it.Happy summer, friends!
