A potato dug up in New Zealand may be the biggest potato ever unearthed. To make the giant spud even better, it has been named Doug by the couple who found it in their garden.

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown found the massive vegetable when they were weeding their garden. When Colin's hoe struck something giant under the soil, the couple knelt down and started digging it up, CNBC News reported.

"We couldn't believe it," Donna said to CNBC News. "It was just huge."

After seeing how big it actually was, the couple had to use a fork to pry it out. After Colin scratched some of the skin, he tasted it and realized it was a potato.

But this didn't look like your ordinary baked potato growing in a garden; this potato almost resembles a turkey. Donna described it as ugly and mutant-looking.

Despite its attractiveness, the spud is possibly the largest on record, weighing in at 17.4 pounds. The couple used an old set of scales in their garage to get the weight of the monstrous veggie.

Now, Doug has become something of a celebrity as the couple has brought him around town in a small cart Colin built for him, showing him off and getting him some sun.

"We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine," the couple said to CNBC News. "It's all a bit of fun. It's amazing what entertains people."

The current Guinness World Record for the largest potato sits at just under 11 pounds, putting Doug in a hefty lead. However, the couple is still waiting to hear back from Guinness on their application.

As for how the potato got so big, the couple has no clue, but they are making the most out of it.

"It's a mystery to me," Colin said. "It's one of nature's little pleasant surprises."

For Doug's future, Colin shared that he may just turn him into a potato vodka.
