Carly Rae Jepsen has always been ambitious, but creating a double album through pregnancy and motherhood is next level. The singer recently joined us inside the Hard Rock Hotel New York to talk about the making of her new project, Day and Night, and opened up about navigating new motherhood while creating the double album and the journey of documenting her pregnancy through the process.

“It feels like nothing was planned, and yet everything took some great deal of thought,” admits Jepsen. “Having a child is such a miracle and an amazing thing, and we were definitely hoping that we would get to have that experience. Once my pregnancy was sort of a real thing and we were digesting that, it sort of just happened that I was finishing this double album.”
“You don't know when that's gonna happen and so for us we're like, ‘OK, how do we make sense of this now,’ and of course that took form in real time where all of a sudden I was 4 months pregnant when it became time to shoot the album artwork and we're like, ‘OK, are we hiding the belly? Are we keeping the belly?’ It was a bit of a choice just like embrace this is what's happening, let's do it.”
It was Carly Rae’s attraction to two different “flavors,” that ultimately called for the double album, oscillating between acoustic folk pop and dancefloor bangers “to make everyone sweat and dance and go home with some glitter on their body.”
“I knew that I wanted to make something true,” she says. “To my shock and delight, I realized I wanted to do both things at once and so that's sort of how ‘Day and Night’ was born.”
