SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Breaking all records, a Chevron station in Mendocino, CA is charging close to $10 for a gallon of regular gas.

The station — which is making headlines as the most expensive gas in the country — was recorded charging $9.60 per gallon on Friday, more than $3 a gallon above the state average of $6.25, SFGATE reported.

Judy Schlafer, owner of Schlafer's Auto Body & Repair at 44901 Main St. in Mendocino, explained to the newspaper that she has to charge that amount or she'd be out of business.

"I'm going to be lucky if I make the year with all the fees, the regulation, the payroll fees," she said. "If it continues the way it is, Mendocino won’t have a gas station next year."

Schlafer's business is the only gas station in the small coastal town. She said her most recent load of gas cost $50,000 when it usually costs $30,000.

Amid the prolonged gas shortage, the station has often been branded as the most expensive gas in the country, however, Schlafer told the newspaper she doesn't believe this, saying that gas is just as expensive in other places.

"Without much of a doubt it's the most expensive gas in the country," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, stated.

The national gas price average on Sunday was $4.84 a gallon.
