The singer, who has seen massive success with her record, “telepatía” sat down with Audacy’s Rosa and opened up about how her music is a touchstone for those who are looking to connect with their multicultural identities in a world where songs sung in English are often more heavily embraced.

She says anyone with “identity issues” can connect to her music, no matter what language the listener speaks. Kali’s latest album, Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) is predominantly sung in Spanish. “telepatía” hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in May and Uchis became the first female soloist without an accompanied act to reach the top since 2012.

Kali told Rosa, “we’re really told for so long that we have to like fit into one box, or be one identity, or be one type of whatever… my message behind my music and my heart has always been very empowering to people just like embracing that full, multi-dimensional aspect of what it really is to be a human being.”

Before dropping Sin Miedo Uchis was told that releasing an all-Spanish album would result in failure. But going with her gut, Kali went into the studio not to make a hit record, but to make a song that would truly “nourish” listeners.
“You lose the soul when you’re just focused on, you know, it being able to sell to a certain demographic,” says the “la luna enamorada” singer.

“For me, the most important thing… ever as an artist, I always wanted to dedicate my life to the arts, and I always wanted to be very conscious of what contribution I was trying to make with what I was putting out,” says Kali. She adds that she also ensures her craft is, “authentic to me, but also make sure it was really something that was coming from my heart.”

Having just released three acoustic versions of tracks off of Sin Miedo, “telepatía” included, Uchis feels like her fans have been waiting for this moment of success longer than she has. The singer feels “blessed and grateful” that her dedication to making music has not only lead to crowning achievements but has also opened the door for the discovery of other Spanish-speaking female artists.

The artist is the second musician of Colombian-decent to ever win a GRAMMY. Kali says that this past year has changed her life in more ways than she ever imagined one year could. “I was proud of the album by its self, without ever knowing it was going to be successful or commercial. I really thought it was a passion project,” notes the singer.

Now, with her sites set on new goals, Kali is working on dropping an eyewear collection, a denim collection, and as she puts it, “a few little surprises,” in regards to new music.
