Jameis Winston’s Deep Ball Takes Center Stage Against Steelers

Cleveland’s offense gets a spark with Jameis Winston under center, but will his deep-ball mentality pay off against Pittsburgh’s defense?

This season has not gone very well for the Cleveland Browns, sitting with a 2-8 record after 10 games, but at least they have become somewhat more watchable now that backup quarterback Jameis Winston has taken over for the injured Deshaun Watson. Everyone knew that it was just a matter of time, or rather contract length, before Watson would have been out of his starting job in Cleveland for his terrible play. Now, after his season ending injury, Browns fans are getting a look at the undeniable talents of Winston.

The former No. 1 overall pick in 2015 out of Florida State, Winston has had an up and down NFL career. He could never perform up to snuff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he has always been very careless with the football, and it’s what keeps him from being a starter in the league. However, there is no denying that he can sling it with the best of them, and he actually also can generate points just as much as turnovers.

Over the course of his career, Winston has been one of the most frequent deep ball throwers in the NFL. Ian Hartitz, who is an analyst at Fantasy Life, dove deep into the statistical coffers to uncover just how much Jameis loves chucking the ball deep.

Whenever Winston has gotten a chance to start in the NFL, his aDOT has consistently been within the top five every single year. This is a huge difference from what we were seeing from Watson this season, who was averaging 7.26 yards, so obviously the change is stark.

However, the Browns haven’t really been able to muster much offense, even with this change. Outside of one game against the Ravens where they put up 29 points, they have scored 10 and 14 in the two games since. Now, they have to take on one of the best defenses in the NFL on Thursday in the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I don’t know if Cleveland will win the game, but I can tell you that Winston is going to be going deep regardless of the opponent or situation. The guy will certainly throw picks, but he isn’t afraid to sling that football no matter the consequences or rewards.
