Foo Fighters will become the first artist to receive the newly announced U.S. Global Icon Award when they’re presented with it at the 2021 MTV VMAs.
According to MTV, the award "celebrates an artist/band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond. The VMAs will honor the global icon who has left an indelible mark on the musical landscape and continues to influence, inspire, and evolve."
Not only will Foo Fighters be on hand to accept the award, it was also announced that they’ll be performing at this year’s show. The appearance is a welcome addition to an award show usually very light on Rock representation.
The band was nominated for three awards at the VMAs: Best Rock, Best Choreography, and Best Cinematography. Each nomination was for their video for “Shame Shame” coming off their newest album Medicine at Midnight.
The 2021 MTV VMA Awards will take place on September 12 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY airing live at 8 PM ET/PT on MTV.
Aside from Foo Fighters, artists scheduled to perform include Camila Cabello, Lorde, Machine Gun Kelly, and Olivia Rodrigo.
