Sitting at 6-8 and eliminated from postseason contention, who will start the final two games of the season at quarterback for the Patriots?
Bill Belichick was asked about it Monday morning and was very vague and then was asked about it again later appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria, but didn't want to really get into it.
Here is how the exchange went.
Merloni: Can a change at quarterback help you guys get in the end zone?
Belichick: Yeah, we’ve talked about that.
Merloni: So, is Cam still your starter this week?
Belichick: We’ve talked about that question. It’s been several weeks that we continue to ask the same question.
Merloni: I understand that. I think now you’ve been eliminated from the playoffs officially and was just wondering with a couple of weeks left does anything change as far as that goes?
Belichick: You ask the same question every week, Lou. Every week you ask if something’s changed. I’ve told you, I already answered…
Merloni: Something has changed because you guys have been eliminated. Maybe you look at Stidham the last two weeks.
[15-second pause]
Merloni: I do wonder how do you balance it. We’re watching Cam Newton play and I think myself and people who watch, there’s a struggle with him moving the football down the field and throwing the football. I don’t know if Stidham isn’t showing what he needs to in practice that once you’re eliminated to give him a couple of games to see what he looks like in a game as a starter.
Belichick: Yeah. Great point, Lou.
Ordway: Is that a possibility? You’re leaving it open-ended, I get that. Is that a possibility?
Belichick: Yeah, again we have a lot of questions as a team we need to answer so that’s really what we’ll be looking at tomorrow, today, this week and so forth. We need to score more points. We need to play the run better. We need to play better situational football. We need to do a better job in all those areas.
The Patriots will take on the Bills next Monday before hosting the Jets in Week 17.
