Brian Scalabrine will be the lead analyst on Celtics telecasts for years to come. The former Celtics forward inked a multi-year extension Friday with NBC Sports Boston, the network announced in a press release.

Scalabrine, who retired after 11 NBA seasons in 2012, dabbled in coaching before heading to the broadcast booth. He was briefly an assistant on Mark Jackson’s staff in Golden State, before being sent to the D-League due to organizational differences.

The following year, Scalabrine announced his return to Boston with a spoof on LeBron James’ homecoming essay from the previous summer.

On the positive side, he’s plugged into the league, and knowledgeable about current personnel. That’s not always a given for color analysts, many of whom retired years ago.

It’s valuable that Scalabrine is personally familiar with many of the league’s star players. He started working as the Celtics’ lead TV analyst during the 2020-21 season following the passing of Tommy Heinsohn, joining Mike Gorman on a nightly basis.

Scalabrine first joined NBC Sports Boston in 2015. He averaged 2.7 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in five seasons with the Celtics.
