Bruins assistant coach Jay Pandolfo is leaving the team to become the associate head coach at Boston University, according to a report from New England Hockey Journal.

Pandolfo, a Burlington native, starred at BU from 1992-96, helping the Terriers win a national championship in 1995 and earning First Team All-American honors in 1996.

Pandolfo was believed to be among the finalists for the BU head coaching job back in 2018 after David Quinn left for the New York Rangers, but the job ultimately went to current head coach Albie O'Connell, who had been the associate head coach under Quinn at the time.

Pandolfo joined the Bruins in a player development role in 2014 before becoming an assistant coach in 2016.

Fellow Bruins assistant coach Joe Sacco reportedly interviewed for the Seattle Kraken head coach job, but didn't get it. In addition, Providence Bruins coach Jay Leach reportedly interviewed for the Arizona Coyotes head coach job, but was likewise passed over. Leach could be a candidate to replace Pandolfo on the Bruins' staff.

BU's associate head coach job opened up earlier this month when the school and Paul Pearl parted ways.
