On the first day of summer, Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens made his first big splash of the offseason... until he didn't.
After a long day of waiting for it to become official, Boston's blockbuster three-team trade for Kristaps Porzingis has fallen apart, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The deal, which The Athletic's Shams Charania reported was "closing in", was expected to be a three-team deal that sent Porzingis from the Wizards to the Celtics, Malcolm Brogdon from Boston to the Los Angeles Clippers, and Marcus Morris, Amir Coffey and the 30th overall pick in Thursday's draft from the Clippers to the Wizards. The Celtics were also expected to include Danilo Gallinari in the deal to match salaries.
It has now "fallen apart" and "sides are moving on."
Marc Stein reports that the deal fell through due to "concerns raised by the Clippers about Brogdon's injury status." Brogdon suffered a partial tendon tear in his elbow during the playoffs.
Wojnarowski has since followed up on this report, tweeting that the "Wizards are still working on ways to get Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics in an opt-in and trade scenario, but it won't be in a three-way with the Clippers," and that Porzingis "still has the ability to decline his $36 million player option and become a free agent."
The sides are now "working under a midnight ET deadline due to Porzingis' option."
Should the deal be completed, The Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach reports that it would likely mean the end of Grant Williams in Boston. The forward is a restricted free agent.
We will have more updates as this story unfolds.
