Celtics sign former Timberwolves forward Josh Minott to a two-year deal

After signing Luka Garza, who spent the last four seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, on the first day of free agency, the Boston Celtics landed another former Timberwolf, inking Josh Minott to a two-year, $5 million deal.

Minott was a 2nd round (45th overall) in the 2022 NBA Draft. The 22-year-old has been in the league for three seasons but has only logged 463 career minutes (508, including playoffs), averaging 2.3 points (48.8% FG, 33.9% 3PT) and 1.0 rebounds per game. He averaged 2.6 points and 1.0 rebounds this past season in 46 games (276 minutes) with Minnesota. The Timberwolves recently declined Minott’s team option, making him a free agent.

Like Garza, who spent time in the G-League during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, Minott has also spent time in the G-League, serving his time during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. The lengthy wing, who stands 6-foot-8 and registered a 6-foot-11.75 wingspan at the 2022 NBA Draft Combine, averaged 22.0 points (50.7% FG, 30.3% 3PT), 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.3 steals in the G-League in 2024.

The signing puts the Celtics slightly back over the second apron, so there will be more moves to come — which comes as no surprise. It’s worth noting that Boston can still operate as a team under the second apron because none of these deals are official yet.

Minott joins Jordan Walsh, Baylor Scheierman, and Hugo Gonzalez in Boston’s collection of young wings looking to compete for minutes ags the Celtics trend toward a less expensive roster.
