Red Sox players, coaches and fans at Fenway Park saluted Dennis Eckersley in the middle of Wednesday’s season finale.
Then in the top of the ninth inning, it was Eck's turn to say goodbye.

The beloved broadcaster signed off for the last time on NESN with the following remarks: “Thank you Boston. Thank you New England for having me. Forever in my heart, and I’ll be back. But this is a special, special day and I will never, ever forget it. Thank you Red Sox, thank you very much. And NESN, and all the gang, have a good one. I will.”
Eckersley was holding back tears at the end of his sign-off.
Afterwards, members of the media lined up outside of the booth to wish Eckersley well.
A Baseball Hall of Famer, Eckersley achieved rockstar status in Boston during his time calling Red Sox games. His vernacular of “Eckisms” — “cheese, gas, paint” — and incisive commentary quickly made hm a fan favorite.
Eckersley, 68, is moving back to his native California to spend more time with his grandkids. He’s clearly at peace with his decision.
“It’s time to be that whole person, and give myself fully to those that care about me,” he told the Globe. “When you’re younger, you’re so focused on the moment, what’s going on with you, that maybe you don’t know any better. Now I know. I know what’s important.”
