Garrett Whitlock headlines wave of Red Sox injury updates

Rob Refsnyder offers update on broken toe

Almost the entirety of Alex Cora's pregame media availability was taken up one one topic: Injury updates.

At the top of the list was news that Garrett Whitlock - who exited Tuesday night's loss after four innings - was headed to the injured list with a strained left oblique. Cora noted that he didn't believe the absence would be a long one.

Taking the place of Whitlock on the active roster is lefty reliever Joe Jacques. Jacques has allowed seven runs over four innings in four appearances with Triple-A Worcester.

The other notable bit of news was that Rafael Devers' knee was deemed good enough for action, with Devers getting the start at designated hitter Wednesday night. Cora noted there was no need for imaging on the knee, which forced Devers from Tuesday night's game after the seventh inning.

The Red Sox' lineup Wednesday is: Jarren Duran LF, Devers DH, Triston Casas 1B, Wilyer Abreu RF, Enmanuel Valdez 2B, Connor Wong C, David Hamilton SS, Pablo Reyes 3B, Ceddanne Rafaela CF.

- Tyler O'Neill isn't deemed ready for action, still going through concussion protocol after running into Devers Monday afternoon. He did participate in throwing drills in the outfield prior to Wednesday night's game.

- Rob Refsnyder (broken toe) was in the Red Sox' clubhouse Wednesday after homering for Triple-A Worcester Tuesday night. He is slated to play Thursday in Worcester with the possibility of being activated over the weekend in Pittsburgh.

- Vaughn Grissom (groin) is scheduled to appear at second base for the first time during his rehab assignment Thursday, having served as a designated hitter for his first three games. He also was at Fenway Park, participating in infield drills.
