Garrett Whitlock's 2022 season is over.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters prior to his team's game in Cincinnati that the Sox were shutting down the pitcher and that he would be undergoing arthroscopic hip surgery next week.

Whitlock has battled the hip injury for much of the season, still feeling the impact of the ailment after coming back from an injured list stint that kept him out of action for more than a month.

Dr. Bryan Kelly - who operated on such familiar names as Mike Lowell, Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask - will perform the procedure.

Two weeks ago, Cora acknowledged that Whitlock was grinding through the injury, saying prior to a game in St. Petersburg, Fla., "I'm moving better than him."

Whitlock has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen since returning on July 15, totaling a 3.34 ERA and .196 batting average against in 18 games.
