The Cleveland Indians are likely going to trade Francisco Lindor this offseason, but which team will be the lucky winner?
Perhaps it will be the Mets.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Indians “would love” for the Mets to be heavily involved in the Lindor sweepstakes, but it will take time for the new front office -- under new owner Steve Cohen and president Sandy Alderson -- to set priorities.
Morosi also noted that a deal is unlikely to happen quickly, which should allow time for the Mets to get involved – should they choose to do so.
The Mets have a wealth of promising young shortstops themselves in 24-year-old Amed Rosario and 22-year-old Andres Gimenez and 19-year-old Ronny Mauricio.
Gimenez can also play other positions in the infield, while Mauricio is the organization’s top-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
Lindor, who turns 27 next week, is one of baseball’s brightest young stars and would be a huge boost for any interested contender. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2021 season, so any team who trade for Lindor will likely have to be able to sign him to a long-term extension.
The Mets have historically had a tight budget, but with Cohen as owner they suddenly have deep pockets and could make an extension possible and would only need to find the right players to put together in a package for the All-Star shortstop.
