Scott Van Pelt knows a bad beat when he sees one, and he's seen 'em all. So when even he was shrugging and chuckling in disbelief in reaction to a last-second play as "Monday Night Football" transitioned to "SportsCenter," you know it was a really, really bad beat.
"This is why we have the (bad beats) segment on the Monday night show," Van Pelt said, while "Stanford" Steve Coughlin cracked up in the background. "Wowzers."
Wowzers is right. The Browns, with no time left, went for a miracle on the final play of the game after an unbelievable fourth quarter back-and-forth between the two AFC North rivals.
The official box score summary of the play is as follows (via Action Network):
B. Mayfield pass short to K. Hunt to CLV 27 for 2 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by CLV-R. Higgins at CLV 27. R. Higgins to CLV 21 for -6 yards. Lateral to B. Mayfield to CLV 15 for -6 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by CLV-J. Landy at CLV 12. J. Landry to CLV 19 for 7 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by CLV-K. Hunt at CLV 18. K. Hunt to CLV 16 for -2 yards. Lateral to R. Higgins to CLV 0 for -16 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by CLV-J. Landry at CLV 0. J. Landry pushed ob in End Zone, SAFETY (M. Humphrey).
Got all that?
It was a miracle, though not in the way the Browns intended. The spread, which for many was either three points or three-and-a-half points in favor of the Ravens, was about to push or result in a win for Browns bettors at 45-42. The 47-42 outcome completely changed that, and it was the good type of miracle for some gamblers.
But more prominently, it was the bad type of miracle. The worst type of miraculous, bad beat that we've seen in the NFL in quite some time. One bettor pushed the line even further in the Browns direction, grabbing them at +4.5 odds with a five-figure wager.
And that customer lost.
A "substantial" amount of money placed at PointsBet, according to Patrick Eichner, was on CLE +3. And those customers lost.
And other books, including SuperBook and BetMGM, saw massive shifts, too, with BetMGM saying that it was a "six-figure swing" in their book (via Matthew Trebby of Action Network).
One cool outcome due to the play that didn't necessarily ruin (or bolster) anyone's bank accounts? We got yet another unique NFL score, as a 47-42 finish had never been seen prior to this point.
