WEEI Football Sunday Show: bill belichick signed new contract prior to season

The fourth quarter of the Patriots’ 29-25 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday was a roller coaster. The final frame consisted of 28 points, two lead changes, a costly fumble, and a Mac Jones touchdown pass to tight end Mike Gesicki with just 12 seconds left that sealed the deal on New England’s second win of the season.

Here’s how the two reacted to the connection following Sunday’s contest:

“We were in two-minute the whole way down,” Gesicki said of his mindset throughout the game-winning drive. “So I was just, kind of, on the sideline just watching everybody make plays and it was awesome to watch our offense do that. Once the ball was on the one-yard line coach O’Brien called that specific personnel to get me on the field. I kind of had a feeling that he was putting me out there for a reason and I was going to have a chance to make a play to ultimately win the game.”

“When I was standing on the sideline that whole two minute drive,” Gesicki continued. “I was just telling myself: ‘Just stay ready, stay ready, stay ready,’ and ultimately that was the play call and I had a chance to go up and make a play to put us ahead with, :15, whatever, seconds left.”

The tight end was then asked about his connection with his quarterback:

“Yeah, I don’t think that a lot of the talk and stuff that happens with him [Mac Jones] is fair, honestly. I think he’s done an unbelievable job with blocking all of that out and he's done an unbelievable job internally leading us throughout all of that adversity. And today, back against the wall, and you know you hear all of the talk about us ‘with a chance to win the game we can’t close’ and all of that stuff, and today we had a chance and he stood in there and delivered play, after play, after play, after play and ultimately we won the game off of… a great ball by him. Just really happy for him.”

Jones himself also spoke about how he stayed composed during the final drive:

“Yeah I think when you look at all of [the previous chances the Patriots have had to win at the end of the game], and I've looked at all of them a lot, there’s a lot of things that go on around and I have to continue to focus on my job and continuing to read the plays that I’m supposed and just lower my pulse and go out there and execute,” Jones said with a smile, likely because he finally was able to do so. “I think that’s what I told the guys in the huddle just ‘let’s take a deep breath and let’s go do it’. Half of it’s just belief and the other half’s execution. So, gotta continue to grow on that.”
