Breaking news: The Patriots’ Matt Patricia de facto offensive coordinator experiment didn’t go well last season.
OK, we all knew that already. You didn’t need to be any sort of expert to see that New England’s 2022 offense was a mess pretty much right from the get-go. The numbers back it up, too, as the Patriots finished 26th in the NFL in offensive yards per game.
Still, it’s notable when a player who was on that team – and a captain on it, no less – bluntly confirms what all of us were already saying. That’s exactly what Devin McCourty did on Wednesday during his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show. Listen to the full interview below.
“That wasn’t a good thing. There was nothing good about that,” McCourty said of Patricia running the offense. “I think a lot of people talk about the season, but from training camp, there was nothing good about that.
“…He’s a really good football coach and a defensive mind, and that’s what he is,” McCourty added of Patricia, who was previously his defensive coordinator. “That’s where he’s made his living in the NFL. So, he’s gonna get back to doing that [in Philadelphia]. … But yeah, I think everybody in New England and even Matty P is happy that whole experiment is over, and he’s back to doing what he loves doing, coaching ball and talking defense.”
The Patriots will see Patricia right out of the gate this season. He’s now the “senior defensive assistant” for the Eagles, New England’s Week 1 opponent on Sunday.
