The Red Sox have explored quite a few options when looking at filling their second base vacancy this offseason. One of them is no longer in play.
The 25-year-old Kim was considered an intriguing candidate considering his age and success in the KBO (whose talent level is widely perceived as somewhere between Triple-A and the major leagues).
Playing shortstop for Kiwoom, Kim finished the 2020 season hitting .306 with a .921 OPS and 30 homers.
The deadline for teams to sign Kim was Jan. 1 after he had been posted earlier I the month. The Padres will be forced to pay 20 percent of the contract's first $25 million to Kiwoom, with another 17 percent going to the next $25 million. After $50 million the fee goes to 15 percent.
The Blue Jays were another team believed to have made an offer to Kim.
