The Celtics don't have a whole lot of money to play with in free agency, which begins Monday at 6 p.m., but they could still make a move or two.
It sounds like their targets will be veteran role players, something they certainly could've used more of last season. According to the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach, the Celtics "prefer to pursue a player with extensive experience and are focused on adding size and shooting."
Himmelsbach names former Celtic Jeff Green as a possible "primary target." The 34-year-old forward, who played for Boston from 2011-15, spent last season with the Brooklyn Nets, where he averaged 11 points and 3.9 rebounds in 27 minutes per game.
He's not the only former Celtic Brad Stevens and Co. could target, with Himmelsbach also mentioning center Kelly Olynyk and guard Avery Bradley as possibilities. Both were traded from Miami to Houston in March as part of the Victor Oladipo deal, with Olynyk in particular finishing the season strong, averaging 19 points and 8.4 rebounds in 27 games with the Rockets.
That could price Olynyk out of the Celtics' range, as they will most likely be looking to add via the mid-level exception -- either the $9.5 million full exception or the smaller $5.9 million exception. As Himmelsbach points out, the Celtics are expected to try to maintain future financial flexibility with an eye towards making a bigger splash next summer.
Other possible targets include several who have played for new Boston coach Ime Udoka, among them forward Rudy Gay and guard Patty Mills. Udoka coached both as an assistant in San Antonio. He also coached Green as an assistant in Brooklyn last year.
It is reportedly looking increasingly likely that the Celtics will not be able to re-sign Evan Fournier, which could hurt them for next season but also give them more future flexibility.
Stevens' first offseason as president of basketball operations has so far seen him trade away Kemba Walker and Tristan Thompson while bringing in Al Horford, Josh Richardson, Kris Dunn and Bruno Fernando.
