Matt Klentak's time as the Phillies' general manager is over.
The Phillies announced Klentak -- a Medfield native who went to Xaverian High -- has stepped down as Philadelphia's general manager.
Klentak's downfall was somewhat tied to his inability to build a bullpen for a Phillies team that was expected to compete for the National League East title. His attempt at saving the Phils' season with the deal that brought Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree from the Red Sox in exchange for Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold failed miserably.
Workman's ERA with the Phillies would end up at 6.92, going 5-for-8 in save opportunities. Hembree wasn't any better, giving up 13 runs in 9 1/3 innings before succumbing to an elbow injury.
The Phillies ended up with a major-league-worst 6.92 bullpen ERA, landing with a 28-32 record.
Philadelphia's record over the five seasons with Klentak at the helm included a 326-382 record without any postseason appearances.
