With three weeks remaining in the NFL regular season, all signs point to the New York Jets holding the No. 1 pick and likely selecting Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence in that spot.
But the Jets need a whole lot more than a quarterback, and every quarterback they have selected in their recent history has not yielded the results many expected, which could be cause for concern for Lawrence.
Yet, the Clemson quarterback sounds as if he is ready for the potentially monumental task of making the Jets a competitive football team again.
“I think I’m ready,” Lawrence said Wednesday on The Dan Patrick Show. “I’m really just ready to take on whatever challenge it is, just to have the opportunity.”
Because of the Jets’ ineptness as an NFL franchise, there had been some speculation that Lawrence would return to Clemson for another season. Lawrence even left the door open himself, but a few weeks ago he was seen being honored at Clemson’s “Senior Day,” which indicated that he was indeed headed to the draft.
“It’s likely,” Lawrence said when asked if it was now official. “I don’t want to completely shut any door … I’m graduating so Coach [Dabo] Swinney let me go ahead and [be honored for Senior Day].”
The Jets do have three more weeks to scare Lawrence back to Clemson, although the quarterback said he hasn’t really watched the team at all this year.
“No,” he said with a chuckle. “I’ve seen some highlights…but honestly, I know some of the stuff sounds cliché, but the opportunity to go somewhere, help someone rebuild – if that’s what it is – or whatever, just win. That’s something I love doing and that’s what I’m best at, is winning.”
