Breaking Boston: Judge, Jury, and very well the Executioner for the 2023 season

While there has yet to be an official announcement from the team, the Patriots updated their website on Wednesday evening with the titles of their 2023 coaching staff.

Of note, Jerod Mayo remains listed as “linebackers coach” despite being extended this offseason, Bill O’Brien is officially the “offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach”, Adrian Klemm and Will Lawing are the “offensive line” and “tight ends” coaches respectively, and Evan Rothstein will enter his first season as the “assistant quarterbacks coach”.

The big update here is Joe Judge, who spent last season as New England's quarterbacks coach.

He now dons the title “assistant head coach.”

While this new title for Judge was already reported to be in the works earlier this offseason, what stood out is where Judge is listed on the page. He's under the “defense” tab.

The last time Judge coached defense? As the linebackers coach for the Division III Birmingham-Southern Panthers in 2008.

Judge primarily commanded the Patriots' special teams unit during OTAs this spring, so it would be quite the shift if he ends up working with the defense.

Perhaps it’s a clerical error, maybe nothing. Or it's possible that there’s more to come.
