Why the Patriots were a ‘dream scenario’ for Kevin Byard

Kevin Byard has been in this situation before, in more ways than one.

The 32-year-old safety has played for three different teams over the last three seasons, and as he adjusts to his newest surroundings with the New England Patriots, he’s doing so surrounded by familiar faces.

“It’s been great,” Byard said. “Being around coaches that I’m very familiar with. It’s been very fun getting to know a lot of my new teammates, a couple teammates I’ve played with, a lot of new faces, really talented team.”

Byard used the words “familiar” and “familiarity” more than a half-dozen times while discussing his arrival in New England. After all, it was one of the biggest reasons the reigning interception leader signed a one-year, $9 million deal with the Patriots this offseason.

“When things didn’t work out going back to Chicago, New England was always going to be kind of like a dream scenario because as you get a little bit older in this league, you want to be able to play for teams that are contenders, but also you want to be with familiar faces,” Byard said. “So, Vrabes, we had kind of had a conversation once free agency started, and I was very happy we were able to get a deal done, and I was able to come back and play for him.”

The 10-year veteran spent the first eight seasons of his career in Tennessee, where Mike Vrabel served as his head coach from 2018 to 2023, before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles midway through the 2023 season. But the familiarity extends far beyond Vrabel.

Byard also has ties to assistant head coach Terrell Williams, defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr, safeties coach Scott Booker, Vice President of Football Operations and Strategy John Streicher, wide receivers coach Todd Downing, and tight ends/passing game coordinator Thomas Brown, among others.

“There is a lot of familiarity in this building for me. So I just think that was huge,” Byard said. “To kind of be on the backside of my career, being with people that know what it takes to win, but at the same time, it’s just familiar, you know what I mean? So I just really enjoy that part of it, and that was a big thing for me coming here. They didn’t necessarily have to like recruit me or send out a recruiting pitch, obviously, a team that’s coming off a Super Bowl, you want to be able to play for a team that you know has a winning culture, and that’s what I’m all about.”

Perhaps another familiar face could eventually join him in New England.

All signs continue to point toward A.J. Brown potentially being traded to the Patriots in a post-June 1 move with the Eagles. Philadelphia would prefer to wait until after June 1, as a trade before that date would trigger a cap hit of more than $40 million in 2026, compared to less than $20 million if completed after June 1.

Byard, who spent three seasons alongside Brown in Tennessee, reunited with him briefly in Philadelphia during the 2023 season and trained with him earlier this offseason, said he hasn’t spoken directly with Brown about the Patriots rumors. However, he hopes the two could eventually reunite in New England.

“Honestly, I try to stay out of that part of the business, because when you talk about contracts or players moving teams and things like that, I want to be as hands off as possible,” Byard said. “We honestly haven’t talked about it directly. I don’t know what the situation is there. I hope it can work out. I hope he can come here and play for us, but that remains to be seen. “

For now, Byard, coming off a season in which he earned first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for the third time in his career, is focused on building relationships with the people in the building he doesn’t already know.

“I’m just trying to get to know the guys that we have here, from Romeo [Doubs], to Pop [Douglas], and all these other guys that we have here. But if we’re able to get A.J., obviously, he’s an incredible talent, somebody I play with. He’s a true number one receiver in this league. So that’ll be awesome to pair up with him again.”
