The 76-year-old is the 19th person in history to achieve the highly-respected award named by an acronym that refers to individuals who have won an Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar, and a Tony.
“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight,” he said in a statement addressing the honor. “The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
Sir Elton earned his first award counting towards EGOT status in 1987 when he took home his first GRAMMY for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with vocals for his part in Dionne & Friends’ “That’s What Friends Are For.” He’s continued on to win four additional GRAMMYs.
He added to his EGOT contention in 1995 when he won his first Oscar as a co-writer for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King. He won his Tony Award in June 2000 for Aida and finally achieved EGOT status last night as he took home his first Emmy to date.
The award was 37 years in the making for Elton.
