PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized Saturday, after police said he shot himself in the hand. His father has been charged in connection with the incident.
Officials said the incident took place around 6 p.m. Saturday, near 42nd Street and Fairmount Avenue in the Haverford North section of the city. The boy was left in a car unattended while his father went into a barbershop for a haircut.
The father also left his gun in the car. According to authorities, while waiting in the car, the boy accidentally shot himself in the hand with that gun.
He was quickly was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia by his grandmother and father, where he was placed in stable condition.
His father was subsequently charged with multiple gun offenses and endangering the welfare of a child.
This happened just one day after Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf was in Philadelphia to address the gun violence crisis. Wolf appeared at a rally with Attorney General Josh Shapiro and area faith leaders to call for state legislators to pass stronger gun laws.
