With a nearly three-hour setlist and endless hits, it’s no wonder why Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band might run a bit late for some fans. Their 2024 World Tour just finished its two concert-stint at the San Francisco Chase Center this past weekend, when a fan had a request of the artist on Sunday night. “Skipping school, sign my note?” read a hand-made sign in the front row, held by an elementary-aged fan. And the sign worked! During their final bow, Springsteen walked over, took the note, and kneeled down to sign it. The band and crowd were clearly proud of the youngster’s wit, as fan videos show Springsteen chuckling as cheers and smiles filled the room.
The San Francisco concert was a total 29 songs long, including the band’s first reinstatement of the song “Two Hearts” since 2016. The tour had just restarted last week following Springsteen’s 2023 health scare and the resulting tour postponement. At the time, 'The Boss' had been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease, though it was said in an announcement that he had been “recovering steadily.” Since then, the 74-year-old artist has returned to the stage without a misstep, making good on his promise to “rock you into the ground.”
“I literally couldn’t sing at all!” he told host Jim Rotolo of the ordeal. “And at the end of the day, I found some great doctors and they straightened me out. And I can’t do anything but thank them all.” The break even allowed Springsteen to make some adjustments to the tour before heading back out. “We’re approaching [the 2024 World Tour] like it’s a new tour,” he said in the interview. “There will be some things from last year’s tour that will hold over; some of my basic themes of mortality and life. Those things I’m gonna keep set, but I think I’m gonna move around the other parts of the set a lot more.”
All in all, it seems like 'The Boss' knows the value of a break -- whether it’s skipping school or actually being sick. And here’s to hoping the fan’s principal accepts the signature.
