PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Nottingham-based snackmaker Herr Foods Inc. is back for a third year with its Flavored by Philly Contest, and it’s time for Philadelphia’s potato chip aficionados to cast their votes.
The contest infuses the regional brand of potato chips with the city's unique flavors — and it infuses the snackmaker’s research and development with democracy. What could be more Philadelphia?
This year, Herr's started from more than 1,000 nominations from friends and fans of the small food businesses that give Philadelphia its distinctive culinary character. Then, Herr's selected three flavors for their culinary mad scientists to experiment with.
What’s at stake? The individual who nominated the winning flavor will receive a $5,000 prize, and the small business that created the flavor will win $10,000.
Well, those three flavors had their debut on Monday. They are:
—Cheese Ravioli and Marinara
—Potato Pierogi
—Special Hot Stromboli
The cheese ravioli and marinara flavor is inspired by the South 9th Street Italian Market staple Talluto’s.
"Talluto’s, a pasta pioneer since 1967, presents a mouthwatering combination of robust cheese ravioli and bright marinara sauce, delivering an irresistible flavor experience,"Herr’s said in a statement on Monday.
The potato pierogi flavor is inspired by Mom Mom’s Kitchen, in Graduate Hospital.
"Mom Mom’s Kitchen, known for its homemade comfort food, presents a delightful blend of sweet, creamy, and tangy flavors with its signature potato pierogi," Herr’s went on to say.
The special hot stromboli is inspired by Italian restaurant Romano’s Stromboli in Tinicum Township.
"Romano’s Stromboli, a Philadelphia institution since 1950, offers a savory fusion of cheese, heat, and tradition, encapsulating the essence of the city in every bite," offers Herr's.
Now, everyone is invited to find these three snacks, wherever Herr's chips are sold, taste them, and vote for their favorite.
Voting goes until Aug. 9.
