Already a major part of the emotional connection that fans have for the original film -- the soundtrack for which ended up being one of the highest-selling ever -- Kenny's iconic track was included again in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick. Unfortunately, he says he was denied a chance to have an updated version of the song included on the new soundtrack. Loggins tells Variety, "six years ago, I ran into Tom [Cruise] when we were both booked on Jimmy Kimmel. I said, 'I know you’re doing the new ‘Top Gun,’ but what’s the deal? Is ‘Danger Zone’ a part of it?' He said, ‘It wouldn’t be ‘Top Gun’ without ‘Danger Zone.’ He stayed true to this word."
However, Loggins says he attempted to do a re-recording of the single, composed by electronic music master Giorgio Moroder with lyrics penned by Tom Whitlock, that sounded "if not exactly like the original, as close as possible — but with better audio and sounds." After meeting with the film's director Joseph Kosinski though, he was convinced the production "wanted the original vibe that song had... it was well-recorded, but it would have had a lot more punch if I could have done it in 5.0. But that said, he wanted to keep it reminiscent of the first 'Top Gun' and set that mood right from the beginning."
Loggins has a brand new autobiography, Still Alright, set to hit shelves on June 14 -- find out how you can order at kennyloggins.com. Also, he's currently performing shows across the U.S. and has a special concert series planned for fans this July 15 and 16 at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, with songwriting partner Jim Messina.
“We’ll be doing Loggins and Messina for an hour, then I’ll come out and do Kenny Loggins for another hour. So you get that full experience,” he says. “There will be a lot of nostalgia coming up for that show,” Kenny adds, "it’s just a one-off special. Jimmy and I are framing it as our gift to that audience who are still around who want to go and buy that ticket... this may be the last time we play together."
