Murphy rails on NJ GOP gun bills after Texas mass shooting

The governor pointed at Sen. Ed Durr’s concealed carry bill

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy voiced his outrage Wednesday over the killing of 19 children and two adults at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and he said now is the time to put all of the gun legislation pending in his state up for a vote.

Murphy was naming names, calling out Republican state senators and assembly members for their proposals on gun laws. He mentioned a bill brought up by state Sen. Ed Durr, R-West Deptford, that would allow for concealed carry permits in the state.

“Let’s put every gun bill up, so the people of New Jersey can see in no uncertain terms who supports gun safety, and who wants New Jersey’s streets and communities to be flooded with guns,” Murphy added.

“Let the people of New Jersey see who votes yes to allowing anyone, and I literally mean anyone, to carry a concealed gun as Sen. Durr and Rep. Ron Dancer (R-Cream Ridge) want.”

Murphy said action on gun laws comes down to either being for safety, or against it.

“Congress has failed to lead time and time and time again, so it’s up to us to do the job others are too weak to do,” said Murphy.

He added that thoughts and prayers are worthless, and that action is the only thing of value.

New Jersey Senate Republicans said Murphy made several inaccurate statements about the  Republican gun bill.

They noted that the bill on concealed carry is not for anyone as Murphy said, and that the legislation is only for authorized gun owners who have had extensive training.
