PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — I-95 northbound is closed for the next few days after a truck carrying an oversized load struck the Conrail bridge overpass in Northeast Philadelphia Monday afternoon.
Starting at 10 p.m. Monday, drivers were detoured to use the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange (Exit 26). Drivers should turn right on Aramingo Avenue, then turn right onto Adams Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North.
The ramp from Castor Avenue to northbound I-95 is also closed and detoured during emergency repairs. Drivers are instructed to use Aramingo Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North at Adams Avenue.
PennDOT advises people to avoid the area until construction is completed. Officials did not say exactly when repairs are expected to wrap up, only that they will take several days.
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Monday. Drivers headed northbound on I-95 through the city's Northeast were delayed for as long as 1 ½ hours, as Conrail and PennDOT crews conducted inspections.
NJ Transit, Atlantic City Rail Line and commercial rail traffic were also suspended until further notice. Conrail and NJ Transit share the railroad on that bridge over the expressway.
Atlantic City Rail Line service was suspended in both directions between 30th Street Station and Cherry Hill. It is not yet known when service will resume, but NJ Transit said rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by PATCO, and a substitute bus service is being provided between 30th Street Station and Cherry Hill.
The Philadelphia Streets Department said some neighborhoods may experience delays with their trash collection, as trucks are being rerouted around the closure.
