Carjacker in backseat surprises 81-year-old man before taking keys, driving away

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Last week Monday, an 81-year-old man was surprised by a man in his backseat who stole his keys at gunpoint and made off with his car. Police have released surveillance video, hoping to catch the carjacker.

The incident happened on May 9 at 1:15 p.m. on North Broad Street, near West Courtland Street in North Philadelphia. According to information from the police, the victim parked his car in front of a restaurant and got out to order lunch to take away.

While he was away from his car, a man opened the door and got into the back seat.

When the victim returned to his car, the man in the back seat held a gun to the back of his head and demanded his keys. There was a brief struggle, and the victim got out of the vehicle safely as the suspect fled southward with the car.

Police are looking for confidential tips — call or text 215-686-8477, or submit an anonymous tip online. They advise against approaching the suspect, and instead ask that witnesses call 911 immediately.
