PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Providence Animal Center in Media is taking its spaying and neutering efforts on the road.
It was granted a 26-foot, fully equipped vehicle in which technicians can go to and perform spay and neuter surgeries in the most-needed areas.
The van has a surgical room toward the back and crates where the animals can come to afterward.
“It takes about a half-hour, 45 minutes to recover,” said Dr. Kim Boudwin.
Vet tech Christine Rivera watches over the cats and dogs in their recovery process.
“This is a dream of ours,” she enthused. “I always said, it’s like a shelter bucket list to be able to have a spay and neuter van and take it on the road.”
The nonprofit Fido Fixers rents out its eight mobile units to animal welfare organizations. Once a week, the van will go to Philadelphia’s animal intake shelter, ACCT Philly, and help spay and neuter cats and dogs so they can get adopted.
It will also offer weekly low-cost surgeries to pet owners in Woodlyn, Delaware County, in the parking lot of Pet Supplies Plus along McDade Boulevard. Appointments are required.
Providence’s vet team is expected to perform about 200 surgeries in the Fido Fixers mobile each month.
