Six Flags Great America is usually open for the season this time of the year, but as a result of the pandemic, it has been forced to shutter its doors like many other businesses and theme parks.
Visitors and pass holders have many questions including: when will the park reopen? What if I have an annual pass? Will we have to wear masks?
Six Flags released a statement earlier this week saying the park will try to reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. In March, the park said it hoped to reopen in mid-May, but was awaiting guidance from authorities. They plan to target reopening in six locations first: Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico. The parks are Six Flags Over Georgia, Six Flags St. Louis, Frontier City, Six Flags Over Texas, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, plus Six Flags Mexico.
Six Flags CEO Michael Spanos laid out a health and safety plan on a conference call with analysts on Thursday, April 30. “We are committed to taking the necessary measures to make our guests comfortable visiting our parks,” Spanos said on the call.
Parks that are reopening will follow strict social distancing measures including face masks and temperature checks. Mobile ordering and cashless transactions will also be implemented as rides will be sanitized more regularly with hand-washing and hand-sanitizing stations will be installed throughout the parks.
For the six locations planning to open first, reservations will be required to enter so that staff can control the number of people inside and ensure proper social distancing.
"To meet state social distancing guidelines and ensure the health and safety of our guests, all visits to the park must be pre-scheduled using our online reservation system," the theme park noted on its website.
As far as the Gurnee, IL location, Six Flags spokeswoman Caitlin Kepple says:
"While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at the property, the safety of our guests and team members is always our highest priority. We will continue to closely monitor this evolving situation, and follow the most current guidance from federal, state, and local officials."
