The 94th Academy Awards drew 16 million viewers on Sunday, and the most captivating moment of the event wasn't even planned. In primetime fashion, actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on-stage in response to a bad joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith's slap heard 'round the world quickly went viral, and it's still being discussed and debated, somehow.
Smith, who happened to win Best Actor on Sunday, apologized to Rock and the Academy for his actions via a statement. As for Rock, he addressed the incident during a scheduled standup show in Boston on Wednesday, saying that he's "still kind of processing what happened." All in all, the 2022 Oscars will forever be remembered for Smith's stunning right hook on live television.
"I think it shocked everybody in the same way... You watched this superhero Will Smith, an icon, have a bad moment. And I thought it was very difficult for everybody," comedian Pete Holmes told The DA Show on Thursday. "But I do laugh when comedians are like, 'Is this going to happen to me?' No, no, no. You're going to be fine at Go Bananas in Cincinnati. You're going to be okay...
"We're such a neurotic people, we're like, 'Does this mean it's open season?' No, it doesn't -- it's going to be just like it was. You'll go to the Comedy Store, tell jokes, eat some chicken fingers, go home... My first thought was, what's Ricky Gervais going to do? He loves roasting celebrities. My hope is we all get another shot, and Will gets another shot to laugh and not be physical."
