The 2022 edition of March Madness is less than two weeks away, and of the 68 teams that will punch tickets to the dance, 32 of them will be conference champions. One of the first mid-major conference tournaments underway is the Big South (Mar. 4-6), and its top two seeds are Longwood and Winthrop.
Last season, Winthrop clinched an automatic NCAA Tournament bid, winning the Big South with a 23-2 record and program-high .920 winning percentage. As a 12-seed in the South Region, they fell to Villanova during the first round. This year, the Eagles are 21-8 overall, eager to reach March Madness for the second straight campaign.
"Winthrop's new head coach is Mark Prosser, many people will remember his father Skip, who did great things at Xavier and Wake Forest," Winthrop's radio voice Dave Friedman told The DA Show on Friday. "They're 21-8, which is just one win shy of the best record all-time for a first-year coach in the Big South. They're really deep, they play nine guys. On any given day, any of those guys can really go off and have a big game.
"But D.J. Burns, who you'll remember from last year, he's enormous. About 6-foot-10 and 300 pounds in the middle. He's the conference player of the year, and he's really difficult... I hope people are following college basketball, now that football season is over. And you've already missed out on the beginning of March Madness... If you're going to fill out your bracket properly in a week and a half or so, you better start watching now."
