Arch Manning commits to Texas… right move? | Maggie & Perloff

Another highly-touted quarterback with the surname Manning will be wearing an orange-colored uniform at the college level. But this time, the orange isn't bright -- it's actually burnt. The long recruiting sweepstakes for Arch Manning reached its conclusion on Thursday, as the blue-chip signal-caller announced his commitment to Texas. Manning, who's the teenage nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, selected the Longhorns over Georgia, Alabama, and Clemson.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Manning has showcased dual-threat traits as quarterback for Isidore Newman (La.) -- unlike his uncles. In three years at the high school, he's racked up 6,307 passing yards with 81 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, and on the ground, he's racked up 742 yards with 19 scores. According to 247Sports, Manning's the top five-star recruit in the 2023 class, and he'll eventually play under Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

"I really think this is amazing for Texas. And it's not that Texas hasn't had great and big-time recruits. But it'll be the highest-rated recruit since Vince Young," Maggie Gray said during Maggie and Perloff on Thursday. "This is fantastic. It shakes things up a bit... And I love that Arch is zagging here, when everyone thought he was going to zig. Whether or not he 'brings Texas back,' he made this so much more interesting. I love that he's blazing his own path here."

"So, Texas wouldn't have hung around in that whole process unless they had a hook into Arch," Perloff said. "Arch Manning blazing his own path? Seems a little over-dramatic and over-narrative. He's looking at some massive NIL deal, a pro-level coach. It's a lot of logic here, too... Blazing a trail to go to arguably the richest program in the nation, it just feels more like a utilitarian move than a brave move... We're a long way from Arch and Texas being in the Final Four."
